Year 9 First Handball Fixture
BackOn Thursday July 3rd 2025, eleven of our Year 9 students participated in a handball fixture against local rivals Oxford Spires.Cheney pulled off an amazing 14-12 victory, despite this being their very first handball match and, as many players confessed, still getting to grips with the rules.
Oxford Spires, with more experience in the sport, were widely expected to take the win. However, from the opening whistle, it was clear that Cheney's inexperience wouldn't dampen their competitive spirit.
First Half: A Rapid Learning Curve
The initial minutes saw our team finding their feet. Passes were sometimes a little off, and defensive strategies were more about quick reactions than planned formations. Cheney took an unforeseen lead in the first half with Spires edging closer and closer. They learned rapidly, adapting their movements and communication with every minute. A huge credit goes to our goalkeeper, who made a series of fantastic saves, frustrating Oxford Spires' attempts to pull away. By halftime, the score was surprisingly close, a true testament to Cheney's quick learning and determination.
Second Half: Unexpected Talent Shines Through
The second half saw a transformed Cheney School team. While still new to the game, their understanding had clearly improved. They started connecting passes more effectively, and their shots, initially a bit wild, began finding the net with increasing regularity. What they lacked in tactical polish, they more than made up for with sheer speed and a relentless drive towards the goal.
Both teams showed incredible resilience and determination throughout. Several players stepped up to become unexpected stars. Their powerful throws and surprising agility caught Oxford Spires off guard. The final ten minutes were incredibly tense, with both teams exchanging goals. Cheney's defense, though perhaps unconventional, became increasingly effective, often relying on sheer numbers and a willingness to commit fully until the final whistle. Well done to all involved!
