We are delighted to share that last Thursday, Khalil, in year 13, received a conditional offer to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) with a Foundation Year at the University of Oxford next year—congratulations Khalil!
Khalil is currently studying Maths, Further Maths and Economics A Levels. We caught up with Khalil to find out more:
What inspired you to apply for the Oxford PPE Foundation course?
I didn’t directly apply to the undergraduate course because I wasn’t initially planning on going to Oxford. However, a month past the deadline for early applicants I came across this course that gives you the option to study one of the most competitive and prestigious courses at a top university.
Why PPE—what is it that you like/enjoy about these subjects?
PPE is an interdisciplinary course. All subjects have their significance and complement each other well. While it may be a heavy essay subject it certainly has a quantitative aspect that can help to model a lot of theories and questions PPE asks.
What did achieving the place on the course involve?
Firstly, you apply directly via UCAS by the equal consideration deadline. By mid Feb, you will receive an email from them asking to complete a FYAAQ [Foundation Year Additional Application Questionnaire] (this is where you talk about any extenuating circumstances you may have). If successful you go through to the interview stages. Finally, results of the interview come out 6-8 weeks later.
For other students like yourself, how would they go about applying for a similar course, and what would you recommend they do?
Cambridge also offers a FY [Foundation Year] if you qualify. If you think you qualify via the requirements on their website and you have certainly been affected by extenuating circumstances, applying to this course may be easier than going through the standard undergraduate route.
Any further advice you have?
I would recommend taking at least one of the subjects in the title because whilst the interview process doesn’t test you on any familiar content, you can certainly explain their questions using what you’ve learned during your course.
Congratulations to Khalil and we wish him all the best with his studies!
