Last Thursday was the black tie event at Oxford Town Hall, highlighting individuals, organisations and businesses championing environmental sustainability in the county.

We were delighted to be one of three finalists again in the 'Sustainable School of the year' award, having won the 'Sustainable Secondary School of the year' at the first awards back in 2024. Congratulations to Magdalen College School who won this year, and also to the other finalist, Fitzharrys School in Abingdon.

Not only are the awards a great way to celebrate sustainability acheivements, the real value lies in the connections made at these events, sharing innovative solutions and best practices. We were delighted to see Wadham College win 'Sustainable College of the year', who, like us, have a goal to become carbon net zero. We visited Wadham last year, and they shared with us the benefits of their infra-red heating system, which we are now trialling in classrooms. Infra-red panels are more energy efficient and we hope will be an alternative to replacing the gas boiler, making a significant financial and carbon emissions saving!

The awards were presented by MBE Nigel Owens, an international rugby referee, who now manages his family farm in Wales. He stressed the importance of education in encouraging sustainability, after an amazing acceptance speech from 12 year-old Joe Rajapaksha, of the Pinewood School and winner of the 'Youth Climate Action Ward.'

It was a great event and we look forward to pressing ahead with all of our many sustainability initiatives.
