A wonderful gift to the library!

Last Thursday, Cheney Alumnus and children’s author Lanisha Butterfield visited Cheney and very kindly donated over 50 books to the library. Lanisha left Cheney in the late 90s and is still based in Oxford. She has recently served as a judge on the Jhalak Prize, which is a national book prize that seeks to celebrate books by writers of colour in the UK and Ireland.

As a judge, she had to read over 100 books and she then donated these books—all of whom feature characters of colour—to the library. To say that Miss Cullen and I were delighted is an understatement—the books are a fabulous addition to our stock and they very much meet our stated aim, which is to curate a library which represents the diverse culture of our school community.

After a quick photoshoot (see below) we then went for a wander around the school so Lanisha could see how the school has remained the same, and how it has changed.

Thank you so much to Lanisha for her kind donation to the library - I can’t wait to share the books with our Cheney Readers!

Here at Cheney we are building our alumni database, if you are a former Cheney student and would like to join our growing community of alumni please click here, or email communications@cheneyschool.org
